Environmental Activities
All business activities inevitably have some impact upon the environment.
To sustain a clean environment for our next generation, we, as a business conducting insurance activities, will provide environmentally friendly products and services to the society.
As global citizens, we will be socially responsible for the environment, reducing CO2, the main cause of global warming, as well as working towards other environmental measures.
Basic Environmental Policy
To tackle global environmental problems in our business activities, the Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group has set “Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group Basic Environmental Policy” to outline specific guidelines for actions and work together as a group.

Environmental Management System
Nationwide, we have received the international standard ISO 14001 certification promoting global environmental protection as a whole group.
Group companies in Japan with ISO14001 accreditation- Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance and its 14 group companies have received ISO14001 accreditation throughout its 346 domestic branches. Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Malaysia has received accreditation overseas. We are solidifying our structure in addressing environmental challenges together as a unit.

- The characteristics of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group's ISO14001 activities lie in its two-headed approach, with simultaneous implementation of (1) All-branch activities and (2) Departmental activities. Activities are constantly under improvement and implementation as dictated by the PDCA cycle.
- Reduction of environmental impact
- A proper understanding of the environmental effects of business activity and the appropriate actions toward their reduction.
Fast clearing of tropical forests is a global environmental problem. In collaboration with the Indonesian government, we are carrying out the “Indonesian Reforestation Project”.

- Statistical details about rooftop afforestation of Surugadai buidling and relaxation of the heat island phenomenon.
- Visits and Classes
- We hold visitation sessions in order to provide better understanding of the greenery. One would find it hard to believe it is on an urban rooftop.
- Places of interest (forest • park • garden)
- Here, you can see wild birds rare in an urban setting, making it a place of recreation and relaxation for neighbors and employees. We will introduce many places of interest, in one of which one can grow seasonal plants.
Along with deterrence of global warming, conservation of biodiversity is now one of the most important agendas on environmental protection. MSIG will actively tackle this issue as a responsible corporate member of the society.
We hold workshops open to the public concerning environmental issues and local community work.
- Spreading ECO Inspections and ECO Maintenance of Vehicles
- We control hazardous gas emissions from vehicles and provide CO2-reducing, eco-friendly maintenance skills at our affiliated car maintenance factory through fuel efficiency improvement.
- Support for certification under Eco Action 21
- We hold seminars and individual consulting sessions to support certification.
- Recycling Automobile Components
- We auction and provide reusable auto parts from damaged vehicles in accidents to recycle markets. We are encouraging environment-friendly repair of automobiles. Upon confirming the customers' inclinations, we encourage repair of damaged parts that can be repaired and the use of recycled parts for this purpose.
Eco Balance: investment trust product, sales of “Sea and Sky”- We sell Eco Balance, also known as “Sea and Sky”, an eco-friendly investment trust product that invests in selected companies that have high environmental awareness and engage in environmental projects. In assessing the companies' environmental projects, we also focus on their preventative measures against global warming.
MSIG engages in various other environmental activities including the environmental workshop for parents and children, and activities promoting economy and ecology in the office, etc.
